Service Description

Tooth Extraction Process Tooth extraction may be necessary for a variety of reasons such as severe decay, advanced periodontal disease, broken teeth, impacted teeth, or preparation for orthodontics. While removing a tooth is sometimes essential, it can lead to problems like difficulty chewing, jaw joint issues, and shifting teeth. Dr. Ameri or Dr. Lashgari will discuss alternatives and replacement options to minimize complications. The Extraction Process During the extraction, the doctor will numb the area with a local anesthetic to ensure comfort. You will feel pressure as the tooth is rocked to widen the socket for removal. While the anesthetic numbs pain, you will still feel the pressure. If you experience any pain, let us know immediately. Sectioning a Tooth In some cases, the tooth may need to be sectioned. This involves cutting the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal, especially if the tooth is firmly anchored or has curved roots. After Tooth Extraction After extraction, it's crucial for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and promote healing. Bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes post-extraction. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and bite down firmly for another 30 minutes. You may need to repeat this process. To avoid disrupting the blood clot, avoid vigorous rinsing, sucking on straws, smoking, drinking alcohol, or brushing near the extraction site for 72 hours. These actions can hinder the healing process. Additionally, avoid intense exercise for the first 24 hours, as it may increase blood flow and cause more bleeding. You may experience pain or swelling after the procedure. Apply an ice pack or frozen peas to reduce swelling, and take prescribed pain medication. Swelling usually subsides within 48 hours. Post-Extraction Care Continue taking any prescribed antibiotics as directed, even if symptoms improve. Stay hydrated and eat soft foods on the day of extraction. Once you're comfortable, you can resume normal eating. Resume your regular dental routine after 24 hours, including brushing and flossing. Most patients feel better within a few days and can return to normal activities. If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, swelling lasting more than 2-3 days, or a reaction to medication, contact our office immediately.
