Child Dentistry
Service Description
Your Child’s First Visit: The first dental visit should occur shortly after your child’s third birthday. The visit is typically brief with minimal treatment, focusing on building trust with your child. You may be asked to sit in the chair with your child or wait in the reception area to help foster this relationship. We will gently examine your child’s teeth and gums, possibly take X-rays to check for decay or the development of permanent teeth, and apply fluoride to protect against cavities. We’ll also discuss the importance of fluoride and review proper tooth care. What to Tell Your Child: Prepare your child the way you would for a first haircut or a trip to the store. Reactions may surprise you, but it’s all part of the process. During the Visit, the Dentist Will: Examine your child’s teeth and gums. Evaluate habits like thumb sucking. Check if your child needs fluoride. Teach you about proper tooth cleaning. Suggest a schedule for regular visits. Preventative Care: Tooth decay is no longer inevitable. We focus on prevention, using dental sealants—space-age plastics bonded to the back teeth—to protect against cavities. Cavity Prevention: Cavities often result from sugary diets and inadequate brushing. Limiting sugar intake and brushing regularly are key to preventing cavities. When food stays on teeth longer, it increases the chances of cavities due to the acid produced by bacteria during digestion. Consistent saliva quality also plays a role in protecting against cavities. Teething and Development: Baby teeth start appearing around 6-8 months, with the bottom front teeth first, followed by the upper front teeth. By about 2 1/2 years old, most children will have all 20 baby teeth. The first permanent teeth appear between ages 5 and 6, replacing baby teeth or growing in alongside them. Every child’s development timeline can vary, so don’t worry if teeth come in a little earlier or later than expected. Why Baby Teeth Matter: Baby teeth are essential for chewing, biting, speaking, and appearance. They also hold space for permanent teeth, making good oral hygiene and a healthy diet crucial for your child’s overall dental health.
